TIOBE Programming Community Index for November 2006

I was scouring Digg this morning and I came over this one. I’ve been tracking it on and off for a while now and I can see two very interesting new-comers, Ruby and D. For those of you who don’t know what D is check out the wiki.

The TIOBE Programming Community index gives an indication of the popularity of programming languages. The index is updated once a month. The ratings are based on the world-wide availability of skilled engineers, courses and third party vendors. The popular search engines Google, MSN, and Yahoo! are used to calculate the ratings.

Two of the things I’d be more than happy to see dragged the hell out of there are Pascal and its sister dumb ass Delphi.

It’s no surprise PHP is losing a little bit of ground, but C#, which has a small index anyways, seems to be pretty much ignored in the community (compared to Java, C). It’s also interesting that C++ is going down big time compared to same period in 2003, and that since June-October 2004 it’s graph is a little symmetrical to that of Java’s. You draw your own conclusions.

A particularity of PHP which I noticed is that every October or so its index reaches the highest value of that year (except, it seems, this year), I believe that students getting back in schools and coding from dorm rooms might be the cause ;)

The site also says “There are 2 months to go before TIOBE announces its “programming language of the year 2006″. Based on the figures of this month there are about 5 candidates left: Delphi, Python, Ruby, SAS, and Visual Basic.“.

Delphi? Language of the year? Are you nuts? Somebody give these guys a larger cup`a coffee and a programming language. Delphi. Huh.
